Lupe Valdez was born in San Antonio, the daughter of migrant farm workers. She attained the rank of captain in the US Army, worked as a federal agent for US Customs and Border Protection and later Homeland Security, focusing on drug and fraud cases for almost 30 years before being elected sheriff of Dallas County. She is the nation’s first openly gay female Hispanic sheriff and oversaw the second largest county jail in Texas.
